Ripstop canvas is a fabric with a reinforced grid woven into it to help prevent small tears from spreading. Originally developed for demanding applications, it is now widely used across Africa for safari tents, awnings, pick-up covers, lorry covers, outdoor blinds, and industrial covers.

Ripstop canvas is used for camping tents because of its exceptional tear resistance and rugged durability. It is woven using a special crosshatch technique that includes thicker, reinforced threads at regular intervals, which ensures that small holes or tears do not spread or propagate across the fabric.

Using Ripstop canvas fabric for outdoor shelters provides several key advantages:

  • Tear Prevention: The signature grid pattern ensures that airborne branches, sharp gear, or accidents with camp equipment only tear a small hole instead of unravelling the entire wall.
  • Weather & UV Resistance: It is often heavily treated with polyurethane (PU) or silicone coatings and UV stabilizers, allowing it to withstand prolonged sun exposure, heavy wind and intense rain without degrading.
  • Breathability: Because it typically features a poly-cotton blend, the fabric remains micro porous, allowing air to circulate. This helps reduce internal condensation compared to pure synthetic tents.
  • Strength-to-Weight Ratio: It provides heavy-duty, military-grade ruggedness without being excessively bulky, which is a major benefit for both heavy-duty safari setups and rooftop tents.
